Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighborhood or teaching sports to younger children)
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Currently, the discourse regarding whether high school curriculum should incorporate non-paying community work as mandatory is being increasingly topical. I strongly agree with the idea mentioned because of its economic and academic impacts for the students.
One of the vital arguments for supporting mandatory student community service is its capability to enhance students’ leadership and communication skills which will be critical in their future workforces. This is because, in this work, the participants will deal with various different backgrounds of people and resolve their common neighborhood’s problems, such as trash management, children-friendly environment, and community interactions with those mentioned competencies. Take recycling program as an example; those youngsters should perform communicative and guided actions to successfully complete the task, ranging from mapping the trash spots, inventing the most suitable solution, to calling the neighbors to discuss before executing the plan together. Therefore, regardless of the result they might acquire, their abilities in those fields would be sharpened and those are doubtlessly valuable for them.
Another compelling point is that public service enables high school students to connect their school lessons with practical lives. The reason is that a large number of theories are waiting to be applied and realized first-hand in these activities. For example, to rebrand messy local parks, the secondary school pupils could apply plant taxonomy from biology class to reorder the pots’ arrangements and name the trees and flowers. Indeed, because the easiest way to learn is by practice, it will be not too surprising if many returners of this service experience significant academic improvements. A study in 2017 finds that a group of students who have given back to society attain better performances in school compared to their previous periods. With this in mind, it is questionable to deem this pursuit to be dispensable in the educational process.
To conclude, considering the benefits of this social attempt for students, it is highly reasonable to make community service obligatory in high schools programs.
